How to Refinish Kitchen Cabinets Without Replacing Them

Kitchen cabinet replacement is one of the most expensive home improvement projects. New cabinets typically run $5,000 to $25,000 or more for a full kitchen. Refinishing the existing cabinets costs a fraction of that. A full DIY repaint with quality materials runs $150 to $500. Professional refinishing runs $1,000 to $3,500. Both routes change the look of the kitchen completely without touching the layout, plumbing, or appliances.

The finish is what most people see. The boxes behind the doors rarely need replacing. This guide covers when refinishing makes sense, what materials produce a durable result, and the prep sequence that determines whether the finish holds.

When Refinishing Is the Right Call

Refinishing works when the cabinet boxes are structurally sound. When there is no water damage, no soft spots, and no delaminating particleboard that has swelled beyond repair. Open each cabinet and press on the floor and sides. If the material is solid, the boxes are good candidates.

Doors and drawer fronts are the visible surfaces. Most of the cost and effort in a cabinet refinish goes into these. If the doors are solid wood or MDF, they take paint and stain well. If they’re thermofoil—a vinyl wrap applied over MDF—they’re harder to refinish. For kitchen cabinets, finish quality matters more than in most other painting applications. Cabinet surfaces take direct contact—hands, steam, grease, cleaning products—that wall paint never encounters. Step 4: Fill and Patch

Fill any holes from old hardware, gouges, or dings with wood filler before priming. Let it dry fully, then sand smooth. Underfilled holes telegraph through paint—the primer and topcoat aren’t thick enough to hide depth variations. If switching hardware style, new holes may need to be drilled; old ones get filled and painted over.

Step 5: Prime

Primer is not optional for cabinets. It seals the surface, blocks stains and tannin bleed-through from wood, and provides mechanical grip for the topcoat. For painting over previously painted or factory-finished cabinets, a shellac-based primer (Zinsser BIN) or bonding primer creates the strongest base. Shellac-based primers bond to almost any surface, including glossy factory finishes that other primers slide off of. Apply two thin coats, sanding lightly between them with 220-grit.

Applying the Finish

Most quality cabinet paints need 24–48 hours between coats and 7–30 days to fully cure, during which the surface is more vulnerable to damage than it will be once cured.

New hardware costs relatively little and has a disproportionate visual impact. Cabinet knobs run $2–$8 each; pulls run $4–$20 at most home improvement retailers. Switching from brass knobs to matte-black bar pulls, or from mismatched hardware to a unified brushed-nickel set, significantly changes the kitchen’s perceived style—sometimes more than the paint color itself.

Check the hole spacing before ordering pulls. Standard spacing for bar pulls is 3 inches center-to-center for smaller pulls and 5 or 6.25 inches for larger ones.   • Spray everything. Brush and roll is adequate; spray is noticeably better. Pros use HVLP or airless sprayers on every surface and achieve a factory-level smoothness that’s hard to replicate with hand application.
  • Apply more coats. Most professional refinishers apply three to four coats of finish plus two coats of primer. DIY projects often stop at two coats of paint over one coat of primer and wonder why the finish chips.
  • Allow full cure time. Professionals schedule reinstallation after the finish has cured—not just dried. A finish that’s dry to the touch in 24 hours may need two to four weeks to fully harden. Reinstalling hardware and hanging doors during cure time damages the surface at every contact point.
