Drum sanders are fast, but they’re also the easiest way to gouge a floor you spent money to refinish. For first-timers and small rooms, orbital and belt sanders do the job with far less risk. The trade-off is time—not results.

Can You Skip the Drum Sander?
For most residential jobs, yes. Drum sanders are the right tool when floors have deep gouges, heavy old finish, or significant cupping. Outside of that, an orbital or belt sander handles the work without the steep learning curve.
The key difference is how each machine removes material. Drum sanders cut aggressively in one direction—hold one in place for two seconds and you have a permanent dip in the floor. Orbital sanders move in small ellipses. No part of the pad stays in contact long enough to damage the wood. That forgiving motion also means you don’t need to stay perfectly parallel to the grain.
Before choosing your tool, assess the floor honestly. Surface scratches and dull finish respond well to orbital sanding. Water stains that have soaked into the wood, deep gouges, and finish that’s flaking in patches all require more aggressive removal—either a drum sander or a professional.
Which Sander to Use
Random Orbital Sander
The safest option for first-timers. The pad spins and orbits simultaneously, which prevents the straight-line scratches that show up under stain. Standard models are fine for light scuffing and final passes. They’re slow on heavy finish removal—plan for multiple passes and more time than you’d expect.
Palm Sander
Useful for corners and tight spaces. Not powerful enough to handle a full room efficiently. Better as a complement to another sander than as the primary tool.
Handheld Belt Sander
Faster than an orbital on open floor areas. Strips finish quickly when worked with the grain. Against the grain at edges, it leaves scratches that need additional passes. Keep it moving and don’t apply extra downward pressure—the weight of the tool is enough.
Festool Rotex
The most capable handheld option. The geared orbital setting oscillates and rotates at the same time—closer to a drum sander in terms of material removal, but still manageable for a careful operator. Edge Sander

Grit Progression: Step by Step

Step 1—Test Before You Commit (36–40 Grit)
Sand a 4×4-foot area in the worst section of the floor first. If 40-grit clears the finish and reaches bare wood, that’s your starting grit. If finish remains, drop to 36-grit. Never start finer than 40—anything higher clogs against old varnish and wears out paper without removing the finish.
Step 2—Remove Old Finish (36–40 Grit)
Work with the grain in overlapping passes. Overlap each stroke by 2–4 inches. Keep the sander moving at a steady pace—stopping or slowing down in one spot creates a low spot that’s hard to fix. Continue until you see bare wood across the full area.
Step 3—Level and Smooth (60–80 Grit)
Switch to 60-grit once the finish is gone. This removes the deep scratches from the coarse pass but won’t strip finish on its own. Make two to three full passes. Follow with 80-grit—the standard middle grit for most American hardwood species. Vacuum thoroughly between grits.
Step 4—Final Pass (100–120 Grit)
Use 100-grit if you’re staining the floor, or if the species is maple or birch. Fine-grained hardwoods absorb stain differently than oak—the smaller scratches left by 100-grit blend better under color. For clear finishes on standard species, 80-grit is often sufficient. Skipping this step on stained floors shows.
Step 5—Edges and Corners
Run the edge sander along all walls. Hand sand or use a detail sander in corners where the disc can’t reach—budget three to five minutes per corner. A scraper removes stubborn finish before sanding in tight spots.
Step 6—Clean Before Finishing
Vacuum after every grit change, not just at the end. Coarse particles left on the surface embed into the wood during finer passes. Vacuum twice if the room is dusty, then wipe with a tack cloth. Dust in the finish cures permanently into the surface.
Mistakes That Show Up Under the Finish
Holding the Sander Still
Even orbital sanders create a depression if you stop moving. Keep a consistent pace across the full stroke. If the machine feels like it’s fighting you, check whether the paper is clogged—loaded paper drags rather than cuts.
Starting With Too Fine a Grit
Fine paper clogs within minutes against old varnish. The paper looks intact but has stopped cutting. Floors in poor condition need 24-grit to break through heavy old finish. Starting at 60 or 80 wastes paper and time without removing anything.
Skipping Grits
Jumping from 40 to 100 leaves scratches from the coarse pass that show through stain and finish. Each grit removes scratches from the previous one. Skipping more than one grit level is where blotchy, uneven stain absorption comes from. You can skip one grit—jumping from 60 to 100 works, though 80 is safer. More than that and the scratches telegraph through.
Not Checking for Leftover Finish
Patches of old finish left on the floor absorb stain at a different rate than bare wood. The result is visible color variation that no amount of extra coats will fix. Sand until the wood is uniformly bare across the full floor—not just in the obvious areas.
Skipping Dust Control
Dust from earlier passes embeds into the wood surface during finer sanding. It also contaminates wet finish and cures into the surface permanently. Vacuum between every grit change. N-95 masks and goggles are required—fine wood dust causes respiratory irritation with repeated exposure.
When to Call a Professional
Orbital sanding works for floors in reasonable condition. If you’re dealing with deep water damage, cupped boards, or a finish that’s peeling rather than just dull, the floor needs drum sanding or professional assessment. Professional floor refinishing runs $3–$8 per square foot—roughly the same as DIY equipment rental on a large job, without the risk of permanent damage from a first-time mistake.
Bottom Line
Orbital and belt sanders handle most residential floors without the drum sander’s risk. The work takes longer—expect two to three times the time of a drum sander in the same area.
